Manitoba's heating season is among the longest in southern Canada, and its homes are split more evenly between gas and electric heat than anywhere else on the Prairies. For an HVAC owner, that means two replacement businesses under one roof: gas furnaces on one side and electric furnaces, boilers and heat pumps on the other. Each has its own margin, install time and seasonal shape, and the dashboard should show them apart.
We are not accountants, and we are not an HVAC contractor. Bookkeeping and tax stay with your own CPA; we coach on the operating numbers.
The Manitoba market and its buyers
According to Statistics Canada's 2023 figures, 52% of Manitoba households heat mainly with natural gas and a further 33% with electricity. That third of the market on electric heat is a large, distinct pool of potential heat-pump customers.
Winnipeg dominates the market, with Brandon, Steinbach, Winkler and Portage la Prairie as regional centres and Thompson as a northern hub.
What that means for your KPIs:
- Split replacement margin into gas and electric or heat-pump lines. If one grows faster than the other, blended margin will move for reasons that have nothing to do with performance. See gross margin by job type.
- Track heat-pump callbacks separately during the first winters with a new product line. Early callbacks are a direct cost of the job type and belong in its margin.
Seasonality and the cash curve
The long, very cold winter produces a heavy, extended heating peak, often from October to April, with a short cooling season in between. Cash is usually strong through the winter and thin in late spring.
For your dashboard:
- Watch overtime as a share of paid hours from December to February. Long peaks invite overtime, which raises burdened labour cost on every call.
- Put a weekly cash line on the dashboard from April to June, when heating collections have finished and cooling has not yet started.
Programs that touch your numbers (as of October 2026)
Efficiency Manitoba's air source heat pump rebate offers $2,000 for a centrally ducted cold-climate unit or $1,500 for ductless, in existing primary residences, with a small bonus to registered suppliers who include a heat-load calculation before 31 March 2027. Program terms change, so confirm details with the administrator before quoting them.
For the dashboard:
- Track the share of heat-pump jobs that use a rebate and whether rebate-linked work changes your close rate.
- If supplier registration adds paperwork, note the office hours spent per rebate job. Admin time is a real cost even though it sits outside gross margin.
An overtime example
Suppose your service team logs 1,400 paid hours in January, 260 of them at time and a half. At a $48 base wage, overtime adds $6,240 in premium alone, before burden. If January's service revenue was $190,000, that premium is over 3% of revenue, enough to move service margin noticeably. A second hire for the peak may cost less than the overtime, and the dashboard shows when that tipping point arrives.
Regulators to know
The Manitoba Office of the Fire Commissioner handles gas and oil burner permits and tradesperson licensing, along with boiler and pressure vessel inspection. WCB Manitoba and Apprenticeship Manitoba also affect labour costs. We link to them for reference only and give no compliance advice.
Your CPA and the provincial body
Your books and tax remain with your own CPA. The provincial professional body is CPA Manitoba. We do not name or refer to partner firms.
How we would set up a Manitoba dashboard
For a Winnipeg company, we would use separate gas and electric or heat-pump replacement lines, an overtime share line in winter and a weekly cash line in spring. For a regional shop, a shorter owner dashboard with drive time broken out is usually enough. See the areas hub for other regions, or call, text or email to start.
Frequently asked questions
Do heat-pump rebates change my margins?
Not directly, but they change mix. When rebates make cold-climate heat pumps more attractive, heat-pump installs grow as a share of revenue, and their install hours and callbacks differ from furnaces. Track them on a separate line.
What is the most common KPI problem you see in long-winter markets?
Overtime. Months of peak demand push paid hours up faster than billed hours, and margin slips while revenue looks strong. A monthly overtime share line catches it.
Can you work with a Winnipeg company and a rural branch together?
Yes. We usually give each location its own labour and margin lines and combine them for cash, since the bank account is shared.
