HVAC financial KPIs in Quebec

Quebec is an electric-heat province, so the HVAC job mix tilts toward heat pumps, electric systems and air conditioning rather than gas furnaces. Heat-pump margin and install productivity lead the dashboard.

Written by Ali Sedighi, MBALast updated:

Quebec stands apart in Canadian HVAC because most homes heat with electricity. That shifts the job mix away from gas furnace replacements and toward heat pumps, electric heating systems, air conditioning and the ductwork and controls that go with them. For an owner, the dashboard should lead with heat-pump margin, install hours against quote, and close rate on the quotes that customers compare most carefully.

We are not accountants and not an HVAC contractor. Your own CPA keeps the books and handles tax; we coach on operating KPIs.

The Quebec market and its buyers

The numbers are striking. Statistics Canada data for 2023 show electricity as the primary heating energy in 70% of Quebec homes, with natural gas at only 5% and wood at 4%. Many households therefore look at heat pumps as an addition to, or replacement for, electric baseboards or electric furnaces.

The largest markets are Montréal, Québec City, Laval, Gatineau and Longueuil, with Sherbrooke, Lévis and Saguenay as major regional centres. Multi-unit buildings and plexes are common in Montréal, which changes who the buyer is and how quickly decisions are made.

What that means for your KPIs:

  • Track ducted and ductless heat-pump installs as separate job types. Their equipment cost, hours and callback patterns differ, and blending them hides both. See gross margin by job type.
  • Measure decision time on multi-unit quotes. Co-owners and landlords often take longer to approve, which shows up as a longer gap between quote and booked install, and affects your cash map.

Seasonality and the cash curve

Cold winters drive heating calls and heat-pump interest in the fall, and hot summers create a strong cooling peak. Because a heat pump does both jobs, many Quebec installers see two strong seasons rather than one, with spring and late fall as shoulders.

For your dashboard:

  • Track install crew-days booked ahead for each month. A heat-pump business lives on its install calendar, and a thin calendar four weeks out is an early cash warning.
  • Compare revenue per paid technician-hour for service and install crews separately, as explained in revenue per technician-hour.

Programs that touch your numbers (as of October 2026)

Hydro-Québec's LogisVert program offers grants for ENERGY STAR and cold-climate heat pumps, geothermal systems and other measures, calculated by capacity and capped per unit. Hydro-Québec notes the federal heat-pump rebate planned for 2027 and says LogisVert requests are being processed normally. Program rules change, so confirm details with Hydro-Québec before quoting them to a customer.

For the dashboard:

  • Track close rate on grant-eligible quotes. If it is far higher than on others, plan for what happens when program terms shift.
  • Watch the share of cold-climate units in your install revenue, since grant structure can push mix toward higher-capacity equipment.

Regulators to know

The Régie du bâtiment du Québec (RBQ) licenses contractors and oversees building safety, including gas, plumbing, electrical and pressure equipment. The CCQ handles construction-trade certification, and CNESST covers workplace health and safety. We link for reference only and give no compliance advice.

Your CPA and the provincial body

Bookkeeping, tax and statements stay with your own CPA. In Quebec, the professional order for CPAs is the Ordre des CPA du Québec. We do not name or refer to partner firms.

How we would set up a Quebec dashboard

For a Montréal or Québec City installer, we would split ducted and ductless heat pumps, add a crew-days-booked-ahead line and track grant-eligible close rate separately. Service companies would add a callback line for new heat-pump installs. The rest follows the owner dashboard. See the areas hub for other regions, or call, text or email to begin.

Frequently asked questions

Is the dashboard available in French?

This site and our KPI reviews are in English. If your team works mainly in French, tell us in your first message so we can discuss how the dashboard definitions are written for your office.

Does LogisVert affect my cash flow?

It can affect demand and sales conversations more than cash, depending on who receives the grant. Track heat-pump close rates and, if any program money reaches you rather than the homeowner, the time it takes to arrive. Confirm program rules with Hydro-Québec.

What is the biggest KPI risk for a Quebec heat-pump installer?

Install hours. Heat-pump jobs vary widely in difficulty, and a few long installs can pull margin down for the month. Tracking hours per install against the quote catches it.
